1. Writing: Techniques of Persuasion - Adverts
This week, we are going to look at the persuasive techniques used to advertise products, whether these be items to buy, places to visit or ideas to 'buy into'.
Today, we shall start off with a short film which is a feast for the eyes. We are going to visit the planet of Pandora: an incredible place in the universe. You are now working for the 'Inta-stella Travel Company' - in their marketing department. Your first job is to begin designing a travel brochure, advertising the brand new package tours to Pandora.
Watch the film here, then come back here to see your task.
Task 1: Writing the Introduction for the Brochure
You need to write the introduction for your brochure, advertising safari tours of Pandora. We need to persuade customers that the huge price of the trip, the 6 month journey time in the newest hyperdrive star-ships. and the fact that you will need to wear breathing apparatus when exploring the dangerous ecosystems is all worth it for the tour of a life time. Can you make these negatives sound like positives?
Point to Note: Today, we are just writing an introduction for the brochure - not going into detail about the things you can do on the trip - that will come later in the week. I will write an example below to guide you.
What Features Can I Use to Present a Persuasive Introduction? A Useful Checklist:
1. Emotive Language:
create powerful feelings in your customers when they read your introduction.
Example: Treat your loved ones with an experience they will treasure forever.
2. Rhetorical Questions:
Ask questions which don't really need an answer - the answer is obvious but you are persuading your customers to ask themselves questions, and answer as you would want them to.
Example: Can your usual holiday compare to this trip to the stars?
In years to come, will you look back and wish you had made the trip of a lifetime?
3. The use of 'Glowing' Positive Language:
Use positive vocabulary to paint a glowing, uplifting picture of what you want to present.
Example: You'll have the wonderful chance to visit the awe-inspiring floating mountains of Pandora, hanging high above the luscious life-giving rainforests.
4. Appeal to be like Everyone Else, or 'the best' people:
Example:
Everyone knows that… All the best people…
It is well known that… It’s believed by all that…
It is universally accepted that…
5. Use a Group of Three
A group of three can create a powerful persuasive effect on the reader.
Example: This breath-taking, thought-provoking and life-changing experience will live with you forever.
The rainforest tour will take you through the luscious green, mysterious and exotic forests of Pandora.
5. Good Use of Alliteration:
Choosing effectivbe words with the same first letter can make your writing mor interesting for the reader:
Example: The magnificent, magical meadows of the Pandoran landscape are home to all manner of grazing beasts.

2. Writing:
Have a look at DCs great activity section for his brochure:
Task 2: This task will cover Friday as well
Today, we shall add a section to our Pandora brochure - focusing on the safari trips you will offer as part of the package holiday. Your company can offer these options to your customer:
1. The Pandoran 'Forest of Life and Light ' experience.
2. The Pandoran 'Alien Skies' experience
3. The Pandoran 'Sub-Aquatic' experience
Write a short paragraph for your brochure about two of these activities : create it in the same way, and with the same checklist as you did for the introduction on Monday. The difference now is that you can add more specific detail about the creatures and activity - what they will see and how incredible the experience will be; persuade the customer that these trips are unforgettable.
To help, I have added some links to help out with information about Pandoran creatures. Remember though, we are not writing a factsheet about the creatures, we are trying to sell the trip to the customer.
This site has lots of information about Pandora

I've also written an example to help guide you below:

The Pandoran 'Forest of Life' experience.
Why not choose one of our unforgettable land safaris, through the teeming forests of Pandora(both in day light and the spectacular illuminated Pandoran night time). As you will no doubt have heard, these green lungs of the planet are filled with a myriad of unbelievable beasts and life-forms unlike anything you could once see on earth.
You will travel through the dense vegetation, fully cocooned and catered for in our state of the art planetary 'Recon' vehicles. Exploring in comfort, your vehicle is fully air-conditioned and capable of travelling smoothly through all types of terrain. Your experienced guide will expertly seek out the most mesmerising sights of alien creatures in their own natural habitat .
See Direhorses grazing in luminescent forest clearings ; gasp in awe as herds of Hammerhead Titanotheres move majestically through forest glades seeking their drinking hole; and gasp as your transport carries you as close as one dares (fully protected behind 6 inch viewing screens) to the terrible beauty of the jet black, ferocious Thanator.
And why not upgrade for that magical night tour: as the sun drops, set out through fluorescent forests of pure light in a dreamlike journey - see the hidden colours of Pandora's flora and fauna. Will you ever experience such an memorable, inspiring, life changing experience. This is all waiting for you on one of our Pandora Eco 'Forest of Life ' activity options. Experience the natural world as never before - on the other side of the galaxy.
If you need to watch the original film again for inspiration, I've linked it below.
Thursday 11th June:
1. Writing
Our vocabulary this week, comes from our exploration of the universe - from our trips to Pandora and Mars. There are some tricky words here, so choose wisely and challenge yourself - this is a great chance to level up that library of words in your head for future use.
Your task:
1. Choose 6 words (challenge yourself) from the list below.
.- you can use either of the two versions.
2. Write down the word, followed by what it means - its definition. Get used to using a real dictionary if you have one - if you haven't got one at homee, you could use an online dictionary.
Challenge 1:
Write a sentence using the word in its correct context.- so it makes sense in the situation you are writing about and you are using the correct meaning of the word.
Challenge 2:
Write a complex sentence, using linking punctuation ( ; - :), and using the word in its correct context.
Challenge 3:
When you have finished writing the definitions, include as many of the words as you can in one short paragraph. As we have visited the old shop of curiosities, this week's theme is 'space.'.
Obviously you will be using a full range of punctuation to help really say what you mean to say - and now you are experts in using brackets.

Friday 12th June:
1. Writing: Techniques of Persuasion - Adverts
We will continue today in finishing our sections for our Pandora Brochure. We need to fully spell-check (something I am noticing lots of you are not doing), and double check that it all makes sense, with no subordinate clauses hanging there on their own.
Task:
You will also want to add a small section of a few lines at the bottom, telling your customers how they can find out more information about the trip, cost and requirements, and how they can contact you.
This afternoon, we are going to learn how to make a foldable booklet which you can use to create your actual brochure, adding your logo, introduction and trip information. I will put some instructions on how to make a variety of books on the curriculum page.. T
