                     Thursday 14th May

                              Science:

                 Evolution and Adaptation:

Today,  we are going to use some resources fro STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and MAthematics).  AS part of our recent studies of evolution,  we are going to find out about how the Peppared Moth has been affected by 'natural selection',  one of the ideas tied up with the work of Charles Darwin,  which, of course,  we have al studied in recent weeks.

I have been researching many many sites to find some good teaching and a fun activity, and I think this one is excellent - I did it myself and learnt some new things about Peppered Moths.

    Task 1:

Before you watch the video, you will need this activity sheet for a great fun and interesting actvitiy later in the lesson about how some populations of animals get stronger. (if you can't pint it out,  just do the actvity in your book, or on paper)

Note: The video says you'll need some black and white paper but you don't need it .

Download the STEM Zwimble Dog Activity Sheet

    Task 2:

Click on the 'STEM Learning'  banner below to watch a great lesson by Jo Montgomery - she'll teach you about animals and how their habitat affect how they evolve, adapt and survive.

I have tested this on mobile tablets but If you are a mobile device and it's not working , you will may need to download the Vevox App first to play it.

If you need to download the whole lesson and the Zwimble story

Download the whole STEM Zwimble Dog story and Activity Sheet

    Task 3:

Answer the following questions about peppered moths in your book.

    1. Why was the original form of the peppered moth pale and speckled? What advantages did this bring to the species whilst resting on tree trunks?

    2. What happened during the industrial revolution which allowed the darker moths to evolve and increase in numbers? What advantages did the darker moths now have?

    3. What happened in the mid 20th century which resulted in the decline in the darker form of the peppered moth - what changed?

    4. What types of factors have influenced the evolution of the peppered moth in the last 200 years? Why was the evolution of this species so fast?

                     Wednesday 13th May

    Task:

Today, you will be extending your Rachael Long artwork by using anything you can find in your house, garden or garage to create an animal sculpture of your own. Knives, forks, spoons are great - or things in the toolbox.

If it's metal,  then all the better to create the look of one of Rachael's sculptures.  Choose whatever animal  or bird you like.

It can be created on a flat surface,  on the grass, or a table top,  or , if you are ingenious, a stand alone figure or creation.  I will also be doing this this morning (as I was up very late last night, checking all the Sats answers, so didn't have time then).  I'll post my efforts here,  and some of yours have arrived now.

                          SG. Silver bird

HY:  Fiish, Cow and Owl... sounds like a reception story book!

                     EP:  'Can-ines'

               EF:  Peacock

                     MH Peacock

                     MH The Kitchen Drawer Cat

       FJ  Snail                                                          FJ Owl

                       DL - Turtles...

                 OR -  Bird in motion

                                    OR Bird on a Branch

                                    Mr H.  ' Watersnip' Down

                                   Mr H.    Almost a spoonbill.

             MW  Octopus

             TS   Elephant

Tip 1:  You could use elastic bands,  wire or string to hold bits together if you can't slot them together.  Blu-tac is great to stop things sliding  over each other.

Tip 2:  You could sketch out the outline of your animal and then place your items over it to create the shape - or chalk it on the floor outside.

Send in photos of your amazoing work so we can create a wall.

NOTE:  please check with an adult at home if you want to use anything which may be sharp or dangerous,  and make sure you have supervision if sharp or dangerous objects are being used.

                      Tuesday  12th May

We were introduced to Rachael Long's work yesterday, and hopefully, you all had a look at her website.  Today we will revisit the site and choose some of her favourite pieces to sketch.

Click Below to Visit The Rachael Long Website

    Task:

Your aim is to sketch one or two of her incredible sculptures, using lines and strokes of your pencil,  without keeping it on the paper and 'drawing' the sculpture.  We are aming to capture that amazing life-like movement Rachael manages to magically capture in her sculptures.

TIp: Pick out and follow each pieces of metal Rachael has used to weld togethr,  this will help you capture the shape accurately.  Here's my first effort below to gice you an idea, but I know you can improve on this.

    Preparation for Tomorrow:

Tomorrow,  we will extend this SATs week art work: we are going to use Rachael's work as inspriation to create sculptures using metal household objects we can find in the house (e.g. spoons, forks, baking utensils, pans, odds and ends and anything else you have lying around in the house, garden or garage).  I will create my own tomorrow and post it on Wednesday so you can see what we are aiming for.

(Click here if you want to see some of her truly astounding work)

Just go back to the #C4TOGETHER page and click on the P.E. Wall (I'll also put at link in the top right on this page).  You'll find your virtual challenge instruction there.

Please, please plaese send a photo or message to the School Games to let them know Wreningham are taking part in this..
