            2.   Creative Writing:  Completing Our Lock down Poetry:

On the Friday before half term,  I asked you to write a poem about your experiences over this strange time.  If you have not completed this, please try to complete it this week,  and type it up.  It would be great for us to create a booklet of our poems from this time.

Make sure you present it beautifully, checking spellings carefully,  and send me you final copy on Word if you can, so I can adjust things to get it into a good format in the booklet.

                                      3.   Creative Writing:

                         The Audience-Grabbing Opening

                                Focus on Commas for Clauses

Okay,  lets rediscover our creative skills after a week in the sunshine.  This picture opens up a world of imagination, and there are unknown stories to tell about the mysterious shop-owner and the objects on sale.  We are going to write an opening to a story, using this picture as the inspiration.

Click below and read an example opening to go with this picture and your task outline - this will give you some guidance as to what we are looking for.

Click here for today's task and guidance pdf document

Remember,  this is 'creative writing',  so you can decide how to write your own opening to this unwritten story - try not to just copy the example and change the words - trust yourself and write something

    of quality.

                                        2.   Writing:

          Practise with Parentheses (or Brackets)

We will be practising our punctuation skills today, and in particular , the use of parentheses: which we can call  brackets.

    Parentheses have several uses:

    1.  To add an authorial intrusion.

This is where the brackets contain words which leave the narrarive or progress of the story, and talks directly at you, the reader - this can create a relationship between the reader and the author - this can add an extra layer to the story.

That morning he dressed in a tracksuit (he thought he was super fit) and trainers.

    2.  To add extra detail.

That morning he dressed in a tracksuit (blue and white) and trainers.

    3.  To add an aside.

This is an extra comment in relation to what youare saying - imagine saying it in a different tone with your hand at the side of your mouth.

That morning he dressed in a tracksuit (which was far too big) and trainers.

    Your Task:

Add parentheses(brackets) with some extra text to these sentences, which fit nicely into the context of what they are about.

    1.  That afternoon, the boy walked slowly home.

    2.  With fear in his eyes, the magicain tried desperatley to remember the words.

    3.  As the door hissed and slid open,  the capatin stepped onto the bridge of the starship.

    4.  The woman looked down at  her watch.

    5.  The boy gazed out of the window.

    6.  If only the warrior could reach his discarded sword, he may have a chance to fight back.

    5.  Time seemed to slow down around her.

    6.  The herd of majestic creatures crossed the plains together.

    Extra Challenge:

Add some parentheses/brackets to your Curiosity Shop writing from Monday.

                   Thursday 4th June:

                                               1.   Writing

    1. This week's comprehension was stuffed full of new and tricky vocabulary - with lots of words we have never used before.  EP is now an expert in using the word 'inept'  Let's see if we now know what they mean and if we can use them in a new context.

    Your task:

    1.  Choose 6 words (challenge yourself) from the list below.

.- you can use either of the two versions.

    2.  Write down the word, followed by what it means - its definition.  Get used to using a real dictionary if you have one - if you haven't got one at homee, you could use an online dictionary.

    Challenge 1:

Write a sentence using the word in its correct context.- so it makes sense in the situation you are writing about and you are using the correct meaning of the word.

    Challenge 2:

Write a complex sentence, using linking punctuation ( ; - :), and using the word in its correct context.

    Challenge 3:

When you have finished writing the definitions,  include as many of the words as you can in one short paragraph.  AS we have visited the old shop of curiosities, this week's theme is 'shopping'.

Obviously you will be using a full range of punctuation to help really say what you mean to say - and now you are experts in using brackets.

    inept

    battered particularly

    conspiratorial /conspirator

    Tentatively / tentative

    halo

    stammered/

    stammer

    half-hearted bolted
    equipment expression bleated

                                  Friday 5th June:

                                       1.   Creative Writing

We will finish the week off by revisiting the Curiosity Shop and using some imagination,  creative writing and strong punctuation skills.

Task:  LO-Creative writing with Competent Punctuation:

I want you to choose three or four questions from the list below to answer.

IMPORTANT:  Your answers should be at least five sentences of detailed, fully punctuated , comprehensive answers - not a quick single , simple sentence answesr.

    Checklist:

    - You must include all of the following punctuation across  your writing (that means at least once over the mini-paragraphs).

    1.  Parentheses/brackets

2.. Commas to separate main and subordinate clauses in your sentence.

    3.  Only a limited number of simple sentences - with most being longer complex sentences (sentences with a main and sub clause and often a conjunction to link them)

    4.  Use of a semi colon to link main clauses, or to separate a detailed list

    5.  Use of a colon to elaborate or explain a sentence.

    6.  Use of a dash for an afterthought.

Here's my example if you are unsure:

'Can you explain the presence of the wanted poster?'

The wanted poster (now tatty and faded) was posted on the shop front, following an unpleasant event which took place several years ago - a very unpleasant event.  Whilst serving a customer, a masked assailent managed to thrust his arm violently over the counter, knocking the startled shopkeeper off his feet: it was a miracle he wasn't seriously hurt. With the counter unguarded, the miscreant made off with a particulalry valuable crystal tricket box; the hair from the mane of a unicorn, encapsulated in amber;  a book of old recipes using dandelions and a small poition bottle to cure forgetfulness.  There was a reward offered for the capture of this criminal although no-one had yet come forward.
